Social Programs

Young Adult Social Group

This group is a social space to meet new people, and integrates theater games, drama play, coffee/tea house time, as well as community outings. It promotes relationship building and fosters skills in social behavior, communication, and social/emotional problem solving. There is a severe lack of related services when people with disabilities graduate from high school. This leads to isolation, depression, suicide, and violence for some of our young people with autism. The number one predictor of job success is social skills, yet our country stops providing this crucial instruction for these skills just as these young people need them the most! Two speech-language pathologists who both hold masters degrees in speech-language pathology lead this group. Speech-language pathologists are typically considered experts in this area of communication and have specialized training in instruction of social skills to people with disabilities.
